−To Offer Customers Reassurance Concerning Data Protection−

Intelligent Wave Inc. (hereafter, IWI; Head Office: Shinkawa, Chuo-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director and President: Yoshiyuki Yamamoto) announced on February 13, 2007 that CWAT, IWI’s digital asset extrusion management platform, had been introduced to 300 client PCs of Tobu Department Store Co., Ltd. (hereafter, Tobu Department Store; Head Office: Nishi-Ikebukuro, Toshima-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director and President: Koichi Nezu), one of Japan’s largest department store operators. |
Tobu Department Store, whose management philosophy rests on offering “the kindest department stores” in Japan, chose the digital asset extrusion management platform CWAT so that its customers can shop with reassurance. |
The enforcement of the Personal Information Protection Law in April 2005, along with other guidelines and regulations governing information technology, has increased pressure on companies for more robust security in recent years. Aware that merely introducing a security system would make it difficult to maintain security across all of its in-house operations, Tobu Department Store introduced an IT resource management program three years ago. It also recognized that strengthening general IT resource management should receive high priority in terms of ensuring proper internal control. Tobu Department Store believes that it is vital to regularly monitors the digital assets of its overall systems, evaluate weaknesses and risks, and take appropriate actions as necessary. |
As part of this security-related initiative, Tobu Department Store began investigating potential internal data extrusion prevention software programs. Tobu Department Store cited as its selection criteria that the system must have “the ability to not only monitor operations on client PCs, but to also control and prohibit operations, as well as the ability to perform such actions in real time.” After evaluating a number of different products, the company chose IWI’s CWAT, which it deemed able to meet all of its requirements. |
Under the new system, the Operation Defense Controller (OPDC) of CWAT has been introduced to 300 of Tobu Department Store’s client PCs. The service of providing an Organization Monitor (OM) to operate as a management server is being handled by Modulat Inc., which helped Tobu Department Store build and operate its IT infrastructure. The status of security management performed by CWAT is sent to the sequential management server. These records (logs) are then sent to the company regularly as status reports. |
One obvious advantage of CWAT is its ability to control and prohibit certain operations. An added benefit is that CWAT’s introduction has served to remind Tobu Department Store’s employees of the importance of protecting the information they handle. A further advantage is that administrative procedures remain unchanged after CWAT’s deployment, so there is no decline in the standard of processing. |
Regarding the introduction of CWAT, Masaki Kazuma, General Manager, Information Systems Department at Tobu Department Store, stated the following: |
“Our aim is to provide services that fully satisfy our customers’ needs. In this respect, we believe that the introduction of CWAT will raise the level of trust gained from customers and their sense of reassurance when they use our services. Observing laws and regulations and pursuing corporate activities in an ethical manner have become part of daily corporate life, but we believe that showing customers that this is being done is actually also very important. Security measures themselves are not necessarily linked directly to our company’s advantage or customer satisfaction. We believe that the implementation of such measures will lead to an improvement in all of Tobu Department Store’s services.” |
Osamu Aoki, Representative Director, Vice President, Corporate Officer and Director of the Security System Division at IWI, added: |
“I am extremely pleased that Tobu Department Store is introducing CWAT. Its earnest initiatives concerning internal control and compliance should serve as guidelines for other companies to follow. We will continue to enhance the functions and improve the quality of IWI’s products so that we may make a contribution to Tobu Department Store’s internal control initiatives.” |

Product Features: |
- In addition to preventing prohibited actions, CWAT detects doubtful and suspicious operations (abnormal operation detection) and through scoring sets limitations on the operation range depending on the operator’s behavior model to prevent digital asset extrusion.
- Provides adequate support functions for security monitoring by “protecting” against the extrusion of not only personal information but digital assets from within the company (employee, financial, customer, management and other information), “attesting” that there have been no extrusions and “uncovering” acts that lead to crime before they occur.
- Multi-language support including Japanese, English, Chinese (simplified and traditional) and Hangul, enabling measures that take into account adoption at overseas bases.
